Open Discussion: What’s Wrong with Vegas?

Welcome to Wild Western Civilization, also known as the resurrection of My Tiny Vegas!
Are you an old timer, has your family lived here for many generations? Or are you new to town, still feeling Vegas out? Whatever your connection to Las Vegas, New Mexico, let’s talk!
I’m opening the blog not with a story, but with an open ear. Please tell me, tell all of us, what’s wrong with Vegas. It might be something small. It might be huge! Let’s get the ball rolling with a great discussion. If I’m going to market our Arts District and our city at large, I need to know what people really think.
Please leave your ideas, thoughts, gripes, in comments, sound off with my Google Voice Mail system – just enter your name and number, then hit connect! You can leave me a voice message with your thoughts. I’ll post the best ones here!

Hi Birdie. I got your newsletter in my email. It’s really nice. I’m going to sign up for the directory next week when I get paid.
I think what we are missing are more family art events. There are a lot of gallery shows. Things like that. But with six kids at home I can’t get out and do those shows. It would be nice if someone would start putting on some kid events. Maybe the arts council can do that. Maybe you can ask them about it. Tanya Montoya(Quote)
Tanya, I agree with you! We definitely need more events for children of all ages. Birdie(Quote)
I would have to begin my answer to this question by considering what’s right with Las Vegas. 1.It’s a pretty affordable place for an artist to live. 2.The visuals (urban and natural landscapes) never cease to inspire me. 3.There are so many creative people, artists and those who don’t see themselves as artists. 4.We have an art supply store. 5.Incredibly valuable institutions of higher learning. 6.Gathering places. 7.Cultural events… I could go on. I first visited Vegas last December and fell in love with the town. It reminds me so much of Ashland, Oregon with the university, Victorian and Queen Anne style houses. I’m hoping to someday move there with my family. We have been there several times, and think about the things we would like to see. Ashland has a world reknown Shakespeare festival, and I think this could be done in Las Vegas with cooperation with Highlands. I also have a nostalgia for the 1930′s, 40′s, 50′s. I would love seeing the neighborhoods more child centered, and having families have block parties. I think Lincoln park would be a great place to have a simple water park for the children to go and play. Robbie Cortez(Quote)
